Domburgsche Golfclub

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1914

Domburgsche Golfclub: Genuine seaside links golf courses are few and far between in continental Europe. Located on the "former" island of Walcheren in the mouth of the River Scheldt estuary, the 9-hole Domburgsche should certainly be included in any list of "true" links golf courses.

Established in 1914, this classic seaside links shelters down behind a line of sand dunes. A few of the tee-boxes and greens provide views onto a spectacular beach and across the North Sea. Although World War II took its toll on the course at that time, several bomb craters dotted around the course were opportunely converted into grass bunkers, and are still much in evidence today.

The greens here are generally fast and maintained in good condition, thanks to both the greenkeepers and the mixed weather – a lot of sun, a little rain and plenty of salty air carried along on those North Sea breezes.

Given the natural drainage of the dunes, this popular and pleasantly challenging course remains playable throughout the year. Originally designed by golf professional E.C. "Charles" Warren, in the early-1900s Domburgsche provided a unique golfing opportunity for both local residents and the many tourists who visited the area. ... as it still does to this day!

Did you know?

During the Second World War the Domburgsche suffered considerably from naval bombardment. The course was brought back into play in 1955. Today, the course is not just characterised by rolling fairways and bunkers, but also by many grass bunkers ... originally craters from the wartime shelling.

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).
