Grantown-on-Spey Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1890

Grantown-on-Spey Golf Club plays home to a locally well-regarded and always well-presented parkland/moorland golf course. Set within a Scottish Highlands environment, the layout sits on the edge of town, separated from the famed River Spey by a few hundred yards of dense pine forest.

Originally established in 1890, the current layout was designed by Willie Park Jr, with later modifications by James Braid. The natural rolling holes, and others of a flatter disposition, provide a wonderful test for your all-round game. The revered waters of Speyside (responsible for many a dram), are the least of your worries as you journey round. The neat bunkering shouldn't prove to troublesome either, but, in high-season, beware spraying the ball too far offline into the unyielding rough.

This blissful northern outpost in the Cairngorms National Park, nestles in partly-open and part-leafy parkland, with a distinctly moorland feel also evident. Grantown understandably attracts many golfing visitors and societies, thanks to its undoubted charms and easy-going playability.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
