George Wright Golf Course

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1938

George Wright Golf Course is located just a 20-minute drive from downtown Boston in the suburb of Hyde Park. This wonderful Donald Ross municipal course starts out from a large red brick clubhouse that wouldn't look remotely out of place in a private country club ( ... as was the original intention for the course).

The layout's DNA comes straight from its surroundings on the edge of neighbouring Stony Brook Park. The Park's undulating terrain, mature indigenous trees and myriad of rocky outcroppings are also hallmarks of the golf course.

Hats off to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Public Works Administration funding programme, which gave Donald Ross an estimated $1,000,000 to create the course. Although the terrain was initially considered to be almost impossible for golf, Donald Ross and his 1,000 PWA-funded crew, created a thoroughly enjoyable and very playable layout.

Did you know?

The City of Boston owns and operates two golf courses for the enjoyment of city residents and visitors: the George Wright Course and William J. Devine Course.

The George Wright Golf Course is named after a Hall of Fame baseball player who played for the Cincinnati Red Stockings and then the Boston Red Stockings in the 1800s.

After his baseball career, Wright (1847-1937) became prominent in the Boston community through Wright & Ditson Sporting Goods, which imported and sold golf clubs in and helped in the development of Boston's Franklin Park Golf Course in 1890. The legendary US Open and US Amateur champion Francis Ouimet (1893-1967) was once an employee of Wright & Ditson.
