Blackmoor Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1913

Blackmoor Golf Club is home to yet another in a long line of classic Surrey/Hampshire wooded heathland courses where heather, gorse, silver birch, oak and fir trees are in abundance, and the demands on your golf are more to do with course management than with power-hitting.

The layout is another of Harry Colt's masterly creations. It incorporates his customary skillful use of the pleasantly undulating terrain. The elevated tee to elevated green par-4 18th must be one of the best looking holes in inland golf. The other 17 deftly designed holes incorporate great bunkering, occasional use of water ditches (watch out at the par-4 1st!) and excellent greens.

In this peaceful setting, you'll need to concentrate on hitting fairways to set up some demanding approaches to well guarded greens. If that doesn't work, just stand back and admire this wonderful area of wooded heathland and, of course, Colt's handiwork.

Did you know?

Blackmoor takes its name from the dark purple heather that abounds in this area. The club's emblem (members will tell you its a hound rather than a dog), comes directly from the family crest of the Earl of Selborne, on whose estate the course is located. An almost identical emblem is used by Selborne Sun Resort in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. You guessed right, the same family owned the South African estate as well.

One of England's prestigious men's amateur events, the Selborne Salver is held at Blackmoor each year, and in former times the course was used as an Open Championship regional qualifying venue.
