Mottram Hall Golf Course

3-star: Good course – an enjoyable test for your game.

Est. 1991

Mottram Hall Golf Course is a pleasant and predominantly open parkland course, skilfully designed by Dave Thomas. Measuring just over 7,000 yards from the back tees, the course lays down a thorough test for players of all handicap levels.

The relatively flat, meadowland of the front-nine has a distinctly open and linksy air. It gives way to a slightly more undulating and occasionally tree-lined back-nine, which loops its way around the historic buildings of stately Mottram Hall, now much enlarged with more recent annexes.

To the sides of the flattish fairways, plenty of stylish, mounded (but at times partly hidden) bunkering lies in wait for slightly wayward tee-shots. Anything hit too far offline, may well end its days in thicker uncompromising grassy rough. The often large and sloping greens are also well-guarded by semi-concealed bunkers, although their presence is generally given away by the more conspicuous mounding into which they are built.

There is much to admire in this layout, which also offers occasional views onto the Derbyshire Peak District. Big-hitters will enjoy several generous width-fairways, while all golfers will be tested by the collection of good length par-3 holes.

Practice facilities

Good

Did you know?

Mottram Hall was formerly a facility operated by the DeVere Hotels group. The original Mottram estate was first established in 1310 by Adam de Mottram. In 1650, Nathaniel Booth, fourth son of William Booth of the Dunham Massey estate, bought it and lived in the timber framed Old Hall, which is now a private house that stands back from the drive about halfway down.

In 1721, Nathaniel's third son (also named Nathaniel) chose to build himself and his wife a manor house on the estate and named it Mottram Hall. In 1738 the hall was bought by William Wright, who was a wealthy landowner, and it remained in the Wright family until 1914. It was converted into a hotel in 1940.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
