Hankley Common Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Hankley Common Golf Club: There is arguably no more beautiful a heathland golf course in the south of England than Hankley Common. Here, perhaps more than anywhere, you can experience what golfing in an environment of wild expansive Surrey heathland is all about. Trees do make their presence felt on some stretches of the course, but much less so than on most Surrey-Berkshire heathland layouts, where woodland has slowly but surely replaced the open heath.

In July and August, with the heather in bloom, Hankley Common is an absolute treat. In terms of presentation, the greens, fairways and bunkering are up there with the best. The fairways are relatively flat, without too much undulation except on a few holes. The opening four-hole loop, containing three excellent par-4s, sets the scene with a characteristic mix of open heathland and other more tree-lined areas.

Where the heather is not predominant, indigenous trees such as rowan, oak and birch stand shoulder to shoulder with their Caledonian cousin - the Scots pine. By the time you reach the exquisite par-3 7th you’ll be captivated by Hankley's charms, and after the superb 18th you’ll probably be reaching for your diary to find the next opportunity to go round again.

Did you know?

Not far from Hankley Common is the historic town of Guildford. With its famous High Street, castle ruins, modern hill-top cathedral and picturesque river (the River Wey), Guildford is often described as the "county town" of Surrey. However, Surrey County Council is still headquartered in Kingston upon Thames, which now lies outside of Surrey in Greater London.
