Harrogate Golf Club

3+ (3 gold): one of our top-rated 3-star courses, worthy of 3½ stars.

Where2Golf says:

Harrogate Golf Club: Although many golf courses in this part of Yorkshire are undulating and moorland in character, Harrogate bucks the trend. Here you will find a more refined, parkland style layout, which has existed on the same site for well over one hundred years. Most of this very well presented course is relatively flat, with the inner front-nine loop enclosed by the anti-clockwise outer ring of the back-nine. The majority of holes are pleasantly, but not too densely lined with a wonderful variety of trees, both young and old, large and small. Water is seldom an issue here, but wayward drives, especially on some of the tighter holes, will invariably need a careful shot back out of the tree-line onto the fairway - and usually a shot dropped ! If water is not much in evidence, then excellent bunkering most definitely is. Small earthmounds also play their part in adding to the challenges around the delightfully "MacKenziean" greens (subtly undulating and not overly large plateaus, raised from front to back with tricky bunkers on either side). Occupying one of the few undulating areas of the course, the par-3 12th signature hole, designed by MacKenzie in 1910, is played from a raised multi-level tee. The green, wonderfully defended by four bunkers, is a tough read for the most experienced golfers. Although not overly long at 6241 yards from the back-tees, Harrogate is a course of immense charm that will give golfers of all abilities a very pleasant and challenging round.
