Sand Moor Golf Club
Sand Moor Golf Club
Est. 1926
Where2Golf says:
Sand Moor Golf Club is home to a course that occupies a wonderful tract of prime golfing terrain in the northern most outskirts of Leeds. As golf boomed in England at the beginning of the 20th century, the easy-draining sandy soil of this moorland-woodland habitat proved ideal for golf. Three courses were established in close proximity to each other, first The Alwoodley, then Moortown and later Sand Moor - each one benefiting from the design work of Dr. Alister MacKenzie, one of the world's greatest golf course designers and a local resident in Yorkshire. The name Sand Moor might have you thinking that you'll be playing over open, rocky and rugged moorland - but think again ! The layout here is an undulating and pleasantly wooded course. Heather and gorse, found in abundance on most moorland courses, makes brief appearances, especially on the back-nine. On the closing stretch you will also encounter the large and picturesque Eccup water reservoir, particularly as you play the par-4 11th through to the wonderful short par-4 13th. With smallish, well-protected greens, several elevated tees plus some up-and-over drives to make, variety and challenge will accompany you all the way round this excellent course.
