Sandiway Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1920

Sandiway Golf Club: Located in the heart of Cheshire, the wooded heathland layout at Sandiway is one of those wonderfully old, established, classic English courses that will challenge and delight the visiting golfer in equal measure. Sometimes described as `The Wentworth of the North' it is certainly a jewel in the Cheshire golfing crown (together with its near neighbour, Delamere Forest GC).

Sandiway's pleasantly undulating and relatively generous fairways are lined with plenty of oak, beech and birch. A few blind tee shots, some elevated greens and others tucked down in hollows ensures a constant variety of golfing challenges on the course. The picturesque back-nine offers unrivalled views of Petty Pool, an old Cheshire mere (small lake), which forms a beautiful backdrop, particularly on the 11th and 12th holes.

Although small by modern standards, the greens are generally of excellent quality, as you'd expect of a course that regularly hosts all manner of top-level amateur tournaments. The only thing likely to disturb your concentration here at Sandiway is the constant chatter of the abundant local birdlife.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club
