South Winchester Golf Club is home to a splendid Dave Thomas designed golf course, located alongside the Hampshire hamlet of Pitt. The layout occupies a relatively open and gently undulating stretch of Hampshire's chalk downland, which ensures the course benefits from fast water drainage should the heavens open. Good mounding, plenty of bunkering, several small lakes and a seemingly ever-present wind all combine to give your golf game a fair and challenging examination. The layout here feels expansive and generally quite open, with many excellent holes throughout. Big hitters will enjoy the usually good-width fairways, but need to be mindful of the various hazards along the way. The excellent 18th for example, is a reachable dog-legging par-5, that finishes in front of the Clubhouse and terrace. A great risk-reward hole to finish your round, with out of bounds, water and bunkers ready to punish any over ambitious or errant shots. With wonderful views over rural Hampshire, especially from the back-nine, this is one of Hampshire's lesser-known modern gems that's well worth a detour to play.

How2Get There?

11 miles N of Southampton
Leave M3 at exit 11 and follow the A3090 / B335 direction Winchester, then Oliver's Battery, then Romsey. Stay on the A3090 for approx 3 miles. Golf is just off the A3090 on your left.

South Winchester is part of the Crown Golf Group. On the short par-4, 5th in the club's 2003 Easter Cup, Paul Daniels recorded a hole-in-one. This is reputedly, at 394 yards, the longest hole-in-one achieved in club competition anywhere in Europe.
