Temple Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1910

Temple Golf Club: Teeing-up at the downhill par-4 first, with the Thames valley spread out in front of you and the river visible in the distance, you immediately feel something special about this golf course. Play here on a sunny day in the autumn when the leaves turn colour, and it is very special indeed.

The undulating terrain continues throughout, but not to the extent that you feel the course is at all hard work on the legs. The beautiful Thames valley views are present throughout, but you'll also need to expend some optical energy weighing up several tight drives and carefully picking the line through the sand and grass bunkers to greens that are generally quick, sloping and often slightly elevated.

There are too many good holes to mention them all, but special note is given to the three long par-3's (200 yards plus); not least among these is the 10th, a long par-3 with a hidden green, sunk down in its own little bowl - its an absolute gem.

Did you know?

Temple Island on the River Thames at nearby Remenham plays host to a "temple" summerhouse built in the mid 1700's (well worth a visit), but as you'll gather from the Golf Club's emblem, the club's name is associated with the Knights Templars of an earlier age.

The large, white, castle-like building that you can see across the valley from the front nine holes is Danesfield House, a 4-star luxury hotel (see below).

Nearby Henley is a wonderful town on the Thames, with plenty more to attract visitors than just the Royal Regatta - the oldest and most prestigious rowing regatta in England, held annually in late June / early July.
