Goodwood Golf (Park course)

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1989

Goodwood Golf (Park course): The remarkable sporting estate of Goodwood, where horse-racing, motorsport, flying and shooting can all be indulged, also offers two top-quality golf layouts: the public-access Park course and the Downs course, reserved for members and hotel guests.

In 1989, it was decided to create a second course on the Goodwood Estate to complement the original James Braid downland layout. Rather than creating a second course up on the Downs, this time the ground surrounding Goodwood House (where James Braid had laid out some early holes) was used to create a classic parkland challenge.

Donald Steel was commissioned to produce a course that would reflect the prestige of the stunning backdrop of Goodwood House and its eighteenth century cedars. The result is an easy-walking course that suits all levels of golfing ability.

The tree-lined fairways that wind their way around Goodwood House are generally flat but not overly wide. Straight-hitting from the tee will need to be followed by accuracy and finesse to hit the relatively small greens. As you come down the 18th, with its spectacular Lebanese cedar, you can take a moment to reflect on the variety of enjoyable and challenging holes on the Park course.

Did you know?

Set in 12,000 acres of rolling Sussex Downland, Goodwood has long been famous for both its natural beauty and its legendary hospitality. The home of the Dukes of Richmond for over 300 years, Goodwood House, designed by James Wyatt, contains one of the finest collections of English paintings and French porcelain and furniture in England.

Goodwood enjoys an exceptional variety and unique mixture of activities, ranging from horseracing, motor racing, flying, golf and shooting. It even has its very own hotel (The Goodwood Park Hotel - see below) and spa.

Golf at the Goodwood Club dates back more than a century, when in 1901, the Duke of Richmond gave permission to play on a superb course laid out by champion golfer and eminent designer, James Braid.
