Where2Golf says:

Walton Heath Golf Club (Old course): Top golfers and golf writers have long acknowledged Walton Heath as one of the finest heathland courses in the British Isles. In fact there are two courses here, the Old and New. Over the years many great heathland layouts, including several of those around London, became more and more tree-lined, creating a genre of "wooded heathland" courses. But not so Walton Heath. Here you can still enjoy 36-holes of championship golf in a wonderfully open golfing environment.

As was intended over 100 years ago, when the Old Course was carved out of the heath's jungle of heather, gorse and bracken, your game is tested on an open inland links. The open heathland frequently inspires thoughts of golf "as it was meant to be."

Your journey on the Old Course starts with a long and testing par-3. Walking away from this opener with par or better will put a smile on your face as you cross the Dorking Road, and begin an out-and-back journey across the sweeping heather-clad terrain. The next five holes are challenging par-4s, one following the other "in series" to the far end of the course. This opening stretch clearly sets the tone for your round. The heather and gorse lined fairways are never overly wide nor unforgivingly tight. Most are protected by prodigious bunkering on one side, and deep heather, gorse or out-of-bounds on the other. The large greens are generally defended by one or two good-size steep-faced bunkers.

Many years ago the great Bernard Darwin wrote of Walton Heath, "there is no more charming place on a fine sunshiny day .... none where the sky seems bigger." This applies as much today as it did in Darwin's time. One small interruption to the unparalleled splendour of this illustrious English gem comes at the far end of the course, where the rumble of traffic from the M25 motorway is briefly heard (but not seen).

Did you know?

Walton Heath Golf Club was founded in 1903 by Sir Cosmo Bonsor, a brewer and businessman who, among many other achievements, organised the amalgamation of London brewery company Watney Combe & Reid. Sir Cosmo and his son Malcolm commissioned Herbert Fowler (related to them by marriage) to create a golf course from the jungle of heather, gorse and bracken that the heath then was.

In 1981 Walton Heath played host to the Ryder Cup, easily won by the USA team (USA 18.5, Europe 9.5). This was the first Ryder Cup on European soil in which the USA faced a European team, rather than GB&I. Walton Heath has also hosted many top-level championships, including the inaugural and some subsequent European Open championships, the News of the World Matchplay for many years, the English Amateur championship and, again for amateurs, the Golf Illustrated Gold Vase.
