Where2Golf says:

Wentworth Club (West course): Located at the heart of the exclusive Wentworth Estate, this temple of British golf is now entirely member-only, since its acquisition in 2016 by a Chinese billionaire. "Burma Road" as the revered West course is known, has a tournament pedigree like few other inland courses in Britain. A Ryder Cup and a Canada Cup (World Cup of Golf) have been played here, as well as more World Match Play and PGA Championships than most can remember.

There's no bigger thrill than teeing-up your ball on the short par-5 1st and preparing to take on one of Harry Colt's greatest creations ... although now you'll need a member's invite to enjoy this thrill. In all respects "Burma Road" is a challenging, big-dimension "trophy" layout. Staying out of the trees and heathery rough that border the frequently tight and gently undulating fairways is key to scoring well. There's some tough and memorable par 3s to tackle. The par-3 2nd with its steeply sloping apron is a much copied gem, and the 14th is one of the best and most famous uphill short holes in England.

The layout throws-up long carries from the tees over heather, while occasional water hazards will need to be avoided, the most testing of which fronts the final green. The bunkering here is impressive, especially around the greens, and not least after Ernie Els' recent make-over. As you will gather from the villas and mansions that discreetly line parts of the course, few things in the Wentworth Estate come cheap ... a place fit for a King ... or nowadays a billionaire Chinese businessman.

Did you know?

Wentworth's West course is often referred to as "Burma Road". This name goes back to World War II, when German PoWs were used to clear the overgrown fairways (the fairways had been allowed to grow wild to prevent enemy planes landing on them). The British officer in charge of the clearance work remarked that the task was akin to clearing the "Burma Road."

Earlier in the war, the Japanese Army had swept across most coastal areas of China, closing all the country's main seaports. An overland route (the "Burma Road") was needed to link mainland China with British-controlled Burma. More than 200,000 Chinese labourers set about the seemingly impossible task of cutting a 700-mile inland road from Kunming in southwest China to Lashio in Burma. Work on the road came to an abrupt halt when Japan overran Burma.

Wentworth's West course has regularly hosted the PGA Championship (now called BMW Championship) and the World Matchplay Championship. For more details view Top Golf Tournaments at Wentworth Club, West Course.
