West Cornwall Golf Club

4-star: generally an excellent standard golf course, well worth visiting.
West Cornwall Golf Club Est. 1889

Where2Golf says:

West Cornwall Golf Club: At the long par-3 opener and par-4 closing hole, you'll be taking aim at the parish church, whose Vicar inspired the creation of this golf course in 1889. As well as the church a whole host of other features all come into play (or view) in this lovely links setting - there is the River Hayle estuary (and harbour), a very quaint single track railway, the odd tin mine or two, sand dunes, pill boxes, the glorious beaches of St Ives Bay with views to St Ives itself, and if that wasn't enough, the stunning and often azure-blue Atlantic is continuously in view. The terrain might be a touch rugged, and the course a tad short, but for most amateurs it will present a very thorough examination, especially on the excellent and subtley sloping greens. And when the wind happens to be blowing, as it so often does, then you can definitely gaurantee your monies worth of shots, and probably a few lost balls as well.

Did you know?

In 1889 Reverend F.F. Tyack, Vicar of Lelant, convened other local dignitaries to plan the development of a golf course on the Towans of Lelant. The 18-hole course completed by 1896 established a layout that is essentially the same today, although lengthened over the years and now with more bunkering. Parts of the clubhouse, not least the wood panelled snooker room, are also much as they were when the clubhouse was built in 1900. West Cornwall's most famous son is legendary golfer, James "Long Jim" Barnes, winner of four Majors between 1916 and 1925. For more details see Jim Barnes profile.
