Woodbury Park Hotel & Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1992

Woodbury Park Hotel & Golf Club: Originally founded by legendary Formula 1 racing driver, Nigel Mansell, and home to his excellent World of Racing exhibition, Woodbury Park is one of southwest England's best Stay&Play golf venues. The 9-hole Acorn course provides the chance to hone your game, before pitting your skills against the top-quality 18-hole championship Oaks layout, excellently designed by Hamilton Stutt.

Starting out with two sharply dog-legging par-5s, the first swinging to the left, the second to the right, you will initially play through the more wooded and tree-lined section of the course.

From the bunkerless but fairly tight par-4 4th you head out into more open parkland, where excellent bunkering and several small ponds and streams provide solid defences to the remaining holes. There is plenty of undulating terrain along the way, although nothing too severe nor tiring.

The rolling fairways, European Tour standard greens, lakes and mature trees combine to present a scenic, thoroughly enjoyable and challenging layout. If your Match Play is all-square as you head to the 18th, this long par-3 closing hole, played over a small lake, will undoubtedly play its full part in deciding the outcome.

Did you know?

Less than a mile south of Woodbury Park, on the B3180 road, you will, maybe unknowingly, drive straight through Woodbury Castle. The castle is in fact a strategically located Iron Age hill fort, which is now a small but raised area of woodland, the highest point on Woodbury Common.

The fort was built around 500-300 BC, at a time when the whole area was a forest. From here, the inhabitants had a commanding view over the River Exe estuary, as well as onto the countryside for miles around and out to sea. Nowadays, in this isolated clump of trees, which you are free to explore at your leisure, you can still clearly see the steep slopes and high banks of the former castle's defences.
