Est. 2008

Heritage Plantation Golf & Country Club: GOLF COURSE WAS PERMANENTLY CLOSED IN 2008, and became a residential development.

[Original Where2Golf description]: Heritage Plantation Golf & Country Club: Although located about 40 miles from the coast, and an hours' drive from Destin, Heritage Plantation is an exciting and relatively new golf course to visit. Tucked away in a quiet, pristine pine forest, with often significantly undulating terrain, the course fits effortlessly into its undulating, woodland setting.

Two anti-clockwise loops of holes take you on an expansive journey through the forest, with little housing yet to be seen (no doubt it will arrive in time, but looks like it will be set well back from the course). Pronounced elevation changes and avenues of tall majestic pines create a wonderfully natural environment.

In addition to the rolling terrain, the golfing challenges are stylishly supported by distinctive circular bunkers and large, round, subtly sloping greens. Around the putting surfaces a mix of excellent bunkering, slick run-off areas and longer, more clinging rough all play their part.

Water and wetlands make a few telling appearances, most notably with small ponds flanking the greens of the par-4 10th, the stunning par-3 14th and long par-4 18th. The par-4 16th is one of several holes played from a scenically elevated tee and requiring a testing carry over wetlands.

It's well worth a detour off the Pensacola to Tallahassee Interstate or driving up from Destin to play this beautifully crafted collection of golf holes. And you can be excused for thinking you've arrived in Carolina rather than in the hinterland of Florida's Emerald Coast.

Did you know?

Heritage Plantation is located close to Laurel Hill, in an area which was one of the first English-speaking settlements (versus Spanish or French) in Florida.

In the 1880s, railroad access to north-west Florida opened up a booming timber industry, with the Yellow River Railroad reaching the area by 1892. In 1895 the township was renamed as Laurel Hill (it had previously been called Almirante), supposedly inspired by a large laurel tree which grew in the centre of the community.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
