Knock Golf Club

3-star: a good golf course with many fine features.
   Knock Golf Club Est. 1895

Where2Golf says:

Knock Golf Club is another in a fine collection of parkland golf courses to be found around Belfast. It boasts a layout crafted by the illustrious talents of Harry Colt, Alister MacKenzie and Hugh Alison. This elegant predominantly tree-lined course is overlooked by the famous Stormont Buildings (home of Northern Ireland's government), with several holes enjoying a backdrop provided by the magnificent Stormont Castle.

The course lays down a good test for golfers of all abilities, with an emphasis placed on accurate driving and well-judged approach play into the always bunker defended greens. Only the long par-4 14th (stroke-index 1) is bunkerless. Trees large and small line many of the fairways, while deep stylish bunkers guard the greens. There's not too much water to worry about, but beware the small stream that cuts in front of the 8th and 18th greens.

The 453-yard par-4 6th is considered to be one of the best holes on the course; it features an araucaria ("monkey puzzle") tree that's said to be over 100 years old and reputedly the oldest such tree in the British Isles. The Knock Golf Club boasts a fine clubhouse that caters for the golfers' every need.

Did you know?

Of the three great designers who worked collaboratively to create the current layout at Knock Golf Club, Charles Hugh Alison is perhaps the least known. He worked extensively in North America as an able lieutenant of Harry Colt. He is also credited with working alongside Colt on many of his most famous commissions throughout the British Isles. Alison is also known for his work in laying out some of the first courses in Japan, including the Tokyo and Hirono courses, which were completed in the 1930s.

Koksijde Golf ter Hille Golf Club: on what was previously open farmland, an enjoyable and challenging links-style layout has been crafted.
