Where2Golf says:

Circolo Golf Villa D'Este: Also known as Montorfano, the fabulous golf course at Ville D'Este is understandably rated one of Italy's best. The quality of the golfing treat that awaits here is quickly revealed at the downhill par-5 1st and returning uphill par-4 2nd.

Mature fir trees together with occasional oak, birch and chestnut provide tree-lined avenues where both short and long-hitters should feel at ease. The fairways are generally wide enough not to induce too much trepidation on the tee.

The five-hole stretch from the 3rd to the 7th includes three par-3s that alternate with two short par-4s. This is where the course loses out in terms of overall length versus some of Italy's other top layouts. However, what the front-nine lacks in length is more than offset by the quality of both the front and back-nines.

From the doglegging par-4 8th onward, Ville D'Este can rightly be described as sensational. Plenty of good length par-4s and 5s, and three more par-3s, exude a picture-perfect look; their stylish greenside bunkering complemented by tall mature trees that frame each hole. The course culminates with the fabulous short uphill par-4 18th; Villa D'Este's splendidly palatial clubhouse looking down on proceedings from above.

Perhaps views onto nearby Lake Montorfano are not as abundant as one would hope. But any perceived shortage of lake views is countered by the elegance of the course itself and more distant vistas of rustic villages nestling on partly wooded mountain slopes.
