Golf Club Castelconturbia

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Golf Club Castelconturbia: High in any ranking of Italy's top golf courses, you'll invariably find Castelconturbia. This excellent Stay&Play venue is home to 27-holes of parkland golf, excellently crafted by Robert Trent Jones Sr. Set in an undulating woodland environment, this big-dimension roaming layout is home to three equally absorbing nine-hole loops: Blue (Chestnuts), Yellow (Pines) and Red (Oaks).

Several elevated tee-boxes look down on pleasantly tree-lined fairways, which in turn steer you to Castelconturbia's challenging greens. The slopes and borrows on the putting surfaces will test your skills with the short stick, while your approach work will also need to be well-judged. Water threatens on several occasions. Many of the greens are handsomely wide, but not at all deep from front to back.

In our view the best 18-hole combination is the Blue-Yellow, which is also the most tree-lined. The Yellow-nine contains a really outstanding stretch of golf holes, up there with the best in continental Europe. The island green par-4 7th (Yellow) is just one of the gems that awaits.

There is a more open feel to parts of the Red-nine, which may prove an attraction for wayward hitters. The par-5 9th (Red) is arguably the best of the closing holes; you'll have plenty to think about on your gentle uphill journey back to the clubhouse, with water and a proliferation of bunkering all in play. All three nines finish in an open expansive environment in front of the clubhouse.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.

Prince's Golf Club, Kent (UK)
