Where2Golf says:

The Els Golf Club Teluk Datai (formerly the Datai Bay Golf Club): Travel as far north and west as you can in Malaysia, and you'll arrive at the idyllic island of Langkawi. Here you'll find the Datai Bay resort, with its excellently crafted championship golf course and two luxury 5-star hotels. Datai Bay (in Malay, Teluk Datai) is one of the best quality Stay&Play venues in Asia.

Ernie Els' layout (a significant redesign of the original Ted Parslow course) is as spectacular as the environment is natural. The course meanders through ancient rainforest, twice heading down to the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea. Overlooked by jungle-clad mountain slopes and the limestone peaks of the Mat Chinchang range, this immensely natural and scenic course is a joy to play. With plenty of elevation change, natural streams flowing through the course, and a few tightish fairways to navigate, your game will be thoroughly tested. Many greens are protected by fast, slick run-off areas, but what you won't find is a single fairway or greenside bunker. The layout is no less challenging for that.

The only sand you'll see as you journey round is when you play alongside the Andaman Sea's enchanting shoreline. At the par-3 5th, par-5 7th, par-4 16th (Paradise Found) and par-3 17th (Andaman Shores), a spectacular backdrop is provided by the coastline's mix of sandy coves and rocky headlands, and the beautiful sea beyond.

The layout is also home to a wonderful variety of flora, while those sometimes tightish fairways ensure you get the chance to inspect the surrounding jungle at close quarters. Don't worry if you hear some movement and crashing around in the dense foliage .... that'll be the resident macaques and dusky leaf monkeys come to inspect your game.

At this Stay & Play venue, the on-site accommodation is located close to the golf facilities.

Did you know?

The Els Club Teluk Datai is operated by Troon Golf, a world leader in golf course management and development.

The island of Langkawi (or to be more accurate 99 islands, with three inhabited), is covered in lush rain-forested hills and valleys. It is a tax-free haven, and therefore popular with shoppers, as well as naturalists, water sports enthusiasts, golfers and tourists just wanting to get far away from the madding crowd. Over 70% of the island remains undisturbed by human activity.

Two varieties of monkeys inhabit the lush rain forest around the golf course at Datai Bay. Like the frequently sighted iguanas, the monkeys will do you no harm, although the bolder macaque monkeys may confiscate any interesting food and valuables found on unattended golf carts. You might also see the darker and rather shy dusky leaf monkeys, who are less inclined to sit and watch you play, opting to scamper away if you get too close.
