The Legends Golf & Country Resort (Nicklaus course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1997

The Legends Golf & Country Resort (Nicklaus course): The Legends concept is a golfer's dream. Comfortable on-site accommodation and three championship courses designed by three golfing legends: Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player. The dream has yet to be fully realised, but Phase 1 - the Nicklaus signature course and the guest rooms - is firmly in place, together with the first nine holes of the Palmer course.

The front-nine of Nicklaus's layout is another in his long line of very competent and enjoyable designs. Many elevation changes, sprawling bunkering, and a water-defended back-nine all occupy this relatively open terrain. Each hole is full of character, imbued with its own challenges. Beyond the course there are views onto the neighbouring palm oil plantation.

The signature par-5 6th drops 100 feet down from a wonderfully elevated tee, and offers two routes to the green: the cautious "lay-up and pitch-on in three" is available, or the riskier carry over water and (you hope) safely "on in two".

If the front-nine wasn't testing enough for you, with only the 6th hole bringing water seriously into play, the scenic back-nine provides a much sterner test. On the inward half, the layout majestically fulfils its potential. Water threatens every tee-shot from the par-4 11th through to the par-4 17th. Several of these holes are amongst the most daunting, yet breathtakingly beautiful that you'll encounter in Malaysia.

From wonderfully elevated tees, you look down onto an exotic mix of small lakes and an enchanting array of tropical trees and flowering shrubs. While picking your way round the back-nine, the resident gallery of macaque monkeys may well take the opportunity to observe your progress, especially at the long par-5 16th.
