Golf & Country Club Lauswolt
Est. 1964
Where2Golf says:
Golf & Country Club Lauswolt; tucked away in a quiet corner of Friesland, you'll find the predominantly woodland golf course of Lauswolt. Laid out in two anticlockwise nine-hole loops, it is arguably the best of the country's more northerly courses, together with Drentse "De Gelpenberg" (50 km away to the south-east). Both these courses were originally the work of celebrated English golf course architect Frank Pennink.
Dating fron 1964, Pennink's original 9-hole layout was mainly played through the trees. The relatively small greens are typically defended by a single strategically-placed front bunker. Small fairway bunkers also occasionally threaten from the tee, but the main intimidation factor comes from the tight avenues of trees lining the not overly wide fairways.
The extension to 18-holes by Pennink's one-time partner Donald Steel, pushed the course out into more typically open Frisian landscape. Here ponds comes into play, not least at the short par-4 4th, with its near "island" green almost entirely surrounded by water.

Lauswolt is located a few kilometres south of Drachten, the second largest town, after Leeuwarden, in the Dutch province of Friesland (also known historically as Frisia). For almost 200 years the production of peat was the main industry in and around Drachten, and was the key factor behind the town's growth in the 1700s and 1800s.
