Golfbaan de Swinkelsche

4-star: generally an excellent standard golf course, well worth visiting.

Where2Golf says:

Golfbaan de Swinkelsche: located less than a half-hour drive from Eindhoven, and flanked by open countryside to the east and dense woodland to the west, Swinkelsche is a relatively recent addition to golfing in the Netherlands.

Dutch golf course architect Frank Pont has created an open linksy course, one to thoroughly test all aspects of your game ... not least your course management skills. Generous width fairways, large greens with equally large sloping run-off areas, and copious quantities of lace-edged bunkering are the hallmarks of this modern layout. Ponds and water ditches, and a few tree-lined holes, also play their part in ramping-up the intimidation factor on several occasions.

MOST MEMORABLE HOLE: few can forget the short par-4 11th. This very creatively designed hole, almost as wide as it is long, includes a huge sandy waste area in the middle of the hole. Your choices from the tee include a short-iron lay-up, then a longer iron to the green. Or you can aim left or right of the waste area, where more of those jagged-edge bunkers seriously narrow the landing areas. Or for big-hitters, perhaps just go for the green with your tee shot!

Did you know?

Swinkelsche was designed by Dutchman Frank Pont, who launched his company Infinite Variety Golf Design in 2003. Originally working for Shell oil company and then Deutsche Bank, he left London in 2001 to study golf course architecture at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. There he specialised in the classic golf courses of Harry Colt and Tom Simpson, some of whose courses he later renovated. While studying, Pont also served an apprenticeship with David McLay Kidd in Ireland and Hawaii.

The Welcombe Hotel Spa & Golf Club: provides an excellent Stay & Play opportunity, just a mile out of town from William Shakespear's birthplace in the centre of Stratford. Royal Ostend Golf Club: represents Belgium’s only real "beside-the-seaside" links golf course (others like Royal Zoute are located a little way inland). Here at Ostend many holes make excellent use of an impressive area of sand dunes. From the long par-4 5th through to the par-5 14th, you play across fabulously open and gently undulating golfing terrain, with few trees, fine sea views and probably a bit of North Sea wind thrown in for good measure.
