Where2Golf says:
Pound Ridge Golf Club sits on the border between Connecticut and New York; a border it once straddled. Now it is firmly and wholly located on the New York side, in the upmarket and prestigious county of Westchester. Other revered names in golf, such as Westchester Country Club, Winged Foot, Quaker Ridge and Hudson National are also to be found in Westchester County. But Pound Ridge, which in terms of drama and design stands alongside those other illustrious names, is the only one of the five you can play without knowing a member.
In a wonderfully natural environment of woodland, wetlands and exposed rock, Pete Dye and his son Perry mercurially crafted a course that abounds with variety, interest and challenge. The tee-box at the par-3 15th is one you will never tire of standing on. Ahead of you is a world-class short-hole that is played over a reed-lined pond to a sliver of green, with a large rock wall providing a dramatic backdrop. Another stunner is the par-5 13th. This requires a drive over a cottage-sized rock, before the testingly tight journey towards the long and wafer-thin green.
The opening and closing sections of this challenging course are played in a linksy environment of large, himalayan mounding. In contrast, the undulating middle section enters what feels like an enchanted forest, where not insignificant elevation changes, wetland areas and impressive rock outcrops all make their presence felt. At all times the Dye family's flair and creativity with bunkering is to the fore, and is often simply sublime. Definitely a course to challenge your all-round game, thrill the senses and well worth going out of your way to play.

In 1980, C.C. Wang and his son Ken bought the remnants of a local public golf course, which straddled the Connecticut - New York border in Pound Ridge. With their purchase came 9-holes that lay on the New York side of the stateline, which they ran as a daily-fee facility for well over two decades. From 2005, with the inspired input of Pete and Perry Dye, they transformed the 9-hole layout into today's fabulous 18-hole course. | Although the Club and all 18-holes are now situated in New York state, everything to the left of the 5th, 6th and 7th holes is in the state of Connecticut. If you hit your ball way left at any of these holes, you may need to cross the stateline to find it.

Koksijde Golf ter Hille Golf Club: on what was previously open farmland, an enjoyable and challenging links-style layout has been crafted. Perhaps the inspiration for Koksijde's new course came from a renowned Harry Colt layout that existed in the 1920s just a couple of kilometres to the west. Read more... |
The Duke Golf Club: represents the latest in a trio of private courses to arrive on the Dutch golfing scene. All prefixed by the definite article, The Dutch (2010, designer Colin Montgomerie) and The International (2012, Ian Woosnam) have now been joined by The Duke, which firmly targets a business clientele and the corporate golf market. Drentse Golfclub De Gelpenberg: as the oldest golf course in the Dutch province of Drenthe, De Gelpenberg offers a partly-wooded and partly-open heathland layout, guaranteed to test all facets of your game. It is arguably the best of the country's more northerly layouts, together with Lauswolt (50 km away to the north-west). Read more... |
