Terrace Downs Resort

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1999

Terrace Downs Resort: Located just over an hour from Christchurch at the base of the impressive Mount Hutt range, Terrace Downs occupies a wonderfully quiet and natural high-country environment. Stunning mountain and rural countryside views are complemented by the resort's full array of outdoor activities, included amongst them is the chance to play a terrific 18-hole championship golf course. The layout's back-nine occupies part of a "terrace", perched high above the Rakaia River gorge. The front-nine is located further back from the gorge on a more elevated "terrace", where the dominant views are onto towering Mt Hutt to the west. The layout is characterised by gently undulating, good-width fairways, usually defended by black-sand bunkers, deep-rough (if you stray too far off-line) and a liberal array of water hazards. The first of a handful of small lakes and ponds makes its presence felt as you contemplate how much of the corner to bite-off on your opening tee-shot. Among many memorable holes, the downhill par-3 10th and short par-4 15th are two that will challenge and delight, especially if you hit the green with your tee-shot on 10 and find the 15th's sliver of fairway. Good-quality, well-paced greens will thoroughly test your putting skills, while also offering some of the best views down onto the gorge's icy-blue waters, especially at the par-4 11th and par-4 13th. Best of all though is the view from the short par-3 16th green, a view that encapsulates the mesmerising beauty of New Zealand's stunning South Island scenery.
