The Dunes Golf Resort

4-star: generally an excellent standard golf course, well worth visiting.

Where2Golf says:

The Dunes Golf Resort: The beachfront development of Matarangi boasts a championship golf course, which is somewhat schizophrenic in character. The front nine starts with two very good, tight tree-lined par-4's, and then becomes rather American in character. The outward holes weave their way inbetween new real estate that is springing-up fast, with water hazards on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th holes. On the 4th and 5th holes there is the possibility of momentarily halting your game should light aircraft be landing or taking-off from the adjacent grass-strip runway. The back-nine however is dramatically different, and thankfully will stay that way. Located at the far-end of a sand spit, it comprises several excellent holes in a compact and natural area of high pine trees, with wonderful views onto the Pacific and into the Matarangi inlet and Whangapoua Harbour. The views and surroundings at the 11th tee are a real touch of paradise. Throughout, the fairways are well maintained and the bunkering not overdone, although you may find the greens a tad on the slow side.

At this Stay & Play facility, you can rise from your bed in the morning and head straight for the first tee.

Did you know?

A plaque at the 2nd tee reminds us that the course is dedicated to greenkeeper Peter Moore-Jones and his assistant Peter Ansin who constructed this layout, but both tragically died in a helicopter accident in 1994.

Tournaments:
Walker Cup: The USA scored a convincing 15.5-10.5 win over their GB&I opponents in the 47th Walker Cup at Royal Liverpool. The USA amateurs won all but two of the Sunday singles matches.
Solheim Cup:  can Europe’s top women professional golfers fair better at Gleneagles than they did in their 2017 Solheim Cup encounter with the USA. (Sept 13-15).

Brian Barnes:  one of the most colourful Scottish golfers of the modern era sadly passed away. Few others can boast two matchplay wins against Jack Nicklaus … on the same day!
Steve Stricker:  three-time Ryder Cup player and 12-time PGA Tour winner, defends his PGA Tour Champions, Sanford International title at Minnehaha CC (Sept 20-22).
