15 miles NW of Southport
Travelling north from Myrtle Beach on US Hwy 17, you will cross the border into North Carolina. Continue on Hwy 17 for approx 22 miles. At traffic lights, turn right onto the 211 direction Southport / Bald Head Island. After 2.7 miles turn right into Winding River Plantation and follow Zion Hill Road. After 1.2 miles turn right into Goley Hewitt Road. After 100 yds golf clubhouse is on your left.
Carolina National
Located on the Winding River plantation, Carolina National Golf Club is home to 27 holes of championship golf. The layout comprises three equally attractive out-and-back nine-hole loops: the Egret, Heron and Ibis.
This is a big-dimension layout that roams its way over a wide area of modestly undulating, mainly wooded terrain. Plenty of small lakes, ponds and wetlands making their presence felt, while tall pines line several fairways, providing a screen behind which real estate often sits.
There is much to applaud and enjoy in this challenging and scenic course. On the Heron and Ibis nines, you are treated to spectacular views onto the expansive marshlands of the Lockwood Folly River, and both these nines have wonderfully testing riverside par-3s, jutting out into the marsh. On the Heron course, the intriguing short par-4 3rd innovatively uses four teeing grounds, widely spaced along a ridge, but all hitting down onto the same water-flanked fairway.
True to form, Fred "Boom-Boom" Couples gives you sufficient space to work the ball from the tee, but care will be needed thereafter. Water or wetland is a threat on several holes, and large sandy waste areas also feature, not least right up the middle of the fairway at the par-4 9th (Ibis).
Some long green-to-tee distances often provide pleasant and tranquil boardwalk drives through natural woodland swamp. If we had to pick a favourite nine, it would be the slightly tighter Ibis, with its more natural feel and containing some of the best of the 27-holes.

Directly to the west of Carolina National is the winding Lockwood Folly River, one of the oldest named rivers in North Carolina. The relatively short river is fed from the Green Swamp Preserve to the north of Supply, and flows down to join the Intracoastal Waterway near Varnamtown.
