Pinewild Country Club (Holly course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1996

Pinewild Country Club (Holly course): Pinewild is able to boast two excellent championship golf courses, the Magnolia and Holly, as well as a nine-hole par-3 course and a three-hole academy course.

Pinewild's Holly course is an excellent Gary Player design that's full of variety, challenge and many beautifully created holes. Like the Magnolia course the setting is undulating and wooded, with pines, dogwoods, magnolias and (on this course) some holly trees all contributing to the attractive naturalness of the layout. What real estate there is, can usually be found at a discreet distance from the course.

Here on the Holly there are more water hazards in play, not least at the par-3 12th, which demands a carry over water from tee-to-green, and the par-4 13th requiring a drive over the same small lake. Some of the drives will feel a bit tighter versus those on the Magnolia, while excellent bunkering, environmentally sensitive swamp areas and sandy wastes are frequently deployed to good effect, either crossing fairways or protecting the greens. The large revetted bunker that guards the front of the elevated 18th green is a bunker of great notoriety, so too are several bunkers that lie in wait at the back of several greens.

This very attractive course may at times feel more technically challenging and less forgiving than its Pinewild stablemate, but Gary Player isn't known for making things too docile, especially on your first outing.

Did you know?

The railway track that passes through the Pinewild community is the Aberdeen - Rockfish line, not overly busy with infrequent freight trains rolling through. You'll cross the line on the Magnolia course, first on your way to the 10th tee, then again on your way back to the 16th.
