The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Grande Lakes

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2003

The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Grande Lakes: The exacting standards Greg Norman set himself as a professional golfer are reflected in another of his challenging and at times technically demanding layouts. In a predominantly natural Floridian wetland setting, Norman has overlaid his design with several traits of a Melbourne sand-belt golf course.

Here at Grande Lakes, the 18 challenging holes are routed alongside many small lakes and ponds, which frequently threaten. The unmounded, flattish fairways are generously wide, giving spacious landing areas, beyond which it is unwise to venture. As you approach the often large and subtly sloping putting surfaces, an array of hazards lie in wait.

Close-mown, links-like green-surrounds create tight lies to fully test your bump-and-run chipping game, while plenty of sharp-edged, stylish and clear to see bunkering could have your sand-wedge fully employed. Water also comes dangerously into play around several greens, not least at the par-4 2nd where a slick run-off area on the leftside will carry your ball away and into a pond.

The wonderfully natural, sometimes tree-lined front-nine, continues into a fabulous "swampside" stretch of holes from the par-4 10th through to the par-4 14th. Thereafter the layout takes a turn towards something more resort-style in character, with views onto the two towering Grande Lakes hotels more in evidence on the closing stretch.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
