Where2Golf says:

Penn National Golf Club is home to two championship courses of equal stature, the Iron Forge and Founders layouts. In contrast to its more tree-lined stablemate, the Iron Forge is more open and linksy in style ... and almost treeless. A short drive from the clubhouse by golf cart, the Iron Forge layout follows a classic links "out and back" routing, with the "turn" coming at the par-4 8th ... as far away from the start as you can get.

Stylish bunkering, swaying fescues and three small ponds (at the par-3 6th, par-5 11th and par-4 15th) make their presence felt on Iron Forge. Some real estate comes into view, especially on the back-nine, but nothing to detract from the openness of the course and surrounding farmland and mountain views.

During the construction of the Iron Forge course, a small lime kiln was uncovered. Dating back to the early 1800s, this kiln is located behind the 9th green. It has been preserved, and golfers are welcome to visit the kiln and learn more about early iron making, and its role in the area's history.

Did you know?

Penn National is a member of the Raspberry Golf Trail, a collection of nine premier golf courses located in Maryland, southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Virginia (see raspberrygolftrail.com).

The names of the two championship courses at Penn National reflect the importance of the iron and steel industry in Pennsylvania. Powering this important industry through the 19th and 20th centuries were abundant supplies of Pennsylvanian coal and oil.
