Royal Wimbledon Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1865

Royal Wimbledon Golf Club: Keeping a low profile on the edge of Wimbledon Common, this very traditional and private golf club, thankfully permits a limited amount of outside visitor play on weekdays. Its one of London's real "hidden" gems and well worth a visit, if you can secure a tee-time.

Thanks to recent renovation work, this historic 125-year-old course is now back to its best. The tree-lined fairways, trimmed with heather and gorse, meander through a peaceful woodland setting. The layout's gently undulating terrain leads you to magnificent greens on which your putting skills will be soundly tested. Some of the course's undulations, especially at the 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th, are created by a large rampart that runs through these holes. It was originally dug by ancient Britons, and later used by the army of Julius Caesar.

Each hole testifies to the craftsmanship of Willie Park Jr and Harry Colt, both of whom had a hand in the course's design. Getting off to a good start on the four opening holes, all par-4s, is an important step from which to build a good round; you'll have got the long par-4 4th (S.I. 1) behind you, with the well-bunkered par-3 5th to follow. Further excellently bunkered and very attractive par-3s, also played to raised greens, await at the 8th, 13th and 17th holes.

Did you know?

Royal Wimbledon traces its history back to 1865, making it the third oldest golf club in England, behind Royal Blackheath (1608) and Royal North Devon (1864). The Club was originally part of the London Scottish Golf Club (est 1865), whose early members (London Scottish Rifle Volunteers) laid out a course on Wimbledon Common. The course was extended to 18-holes in 1871 by designer Tom Dunn. From 1869 London Scottish GC allowed civilian golfers to join, although around 1881 the club split into separate civilian and military factions. The two factions continued to share the course. In 1882 Royal Wimbledon GC was created by the civilian faction, and subsequently moved to a new 18-hole course, just south of the London Scottish course. [London Scottish GC still thrives today, using the Wimbledon Common course, which it shares with Wimbledon Common GC (est 1908)].

Long before golf was played on the Common, ancient Britons constructed a fortification hereabouts, the outline of which is shown on Royal Wimbledon's scorecard. Julius Caesar's army used this fortification as their base camp in 54 BC; the Club is located in Camp Road. (Look out for the marker stone on your right as you head to the 7th tee). | From the 10th hole you can clearly see Coombe Hill GC across the valley.

Queen Victoria conferred the Royal prefix on the club in 1882, based on the patronage of her son, Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII). By royal prerogative, 19 English golf clubs use the "Royal" title, namely: Ascot, Ashdown Forest, Birkdale, Blackheath, Cinque Ports, Cromer, Eastbourne, Epping Forest, Household (Windsor Castle), Liverpool (Hoylake), Lytham & St Annes, Mid-Surrey, North Devon (Westward Ho!), Norwich, St George's, West Norfolk (Brancaster), Wimbledon, Winchester, Worlington & Newmarket.
