Goose Valley Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1996

Goose Valley Golf Club: Gary Player has woven all manner of interesting features into this varied and challenging layout, located just outside Plettenberg Bay. However, the valley implied in the course's name, is not one of its more obvious features. A small river running alongside the gently dog-legging first hole, may be as close as this well-presented course comes to its "valley" name.

Top of the "hazard" list here is excellent bunkering throughout. Both along the fairways and around the greens, many deep, straight-faced, revetted style bunkers will need to be avoided. The signature par-3 11th, with its wonderful ocean backdrop is heavily defended by five revetted style bunkers, while the attractive final hole, a mid-length par-4, is accompanied by another riot of bunkers around the green.

Occasionally the course meanders "in-and-out" of the houses. However, for most of the time the relatively open and undulating terrain combines with views onto local hills, the Indian Ocean and faraway mountains, ensuring a scenic and enjoyable round. The stretch from the par-3 11th to the long par-3 13th is played closest to the sea amongst dense fynbos vegetation.

Big hitters will enjoy the good width fairways on the par-5s and longer par-4s. More tactical players should do well at the clutch of tighter and shorter par-4s. On a couple of occasions the course comes close to the N2 Highway, but not to the detriment of your round, unless you miscue and hook your ball onto the road at the par-4 15th!

Did you know?

The Goose Valley Golf Course borders the Keurbooms Lagoon and provides golfers with wonderful views onto the lagoon, the Indian Ocean and the Tsitsikamma Mountains.

Plettenberg Bay was originally charted by Portuguese explorers in the 15th and 16th centuries, the first being Bartholomew Dias in 1487. Ninety years later Manuel da Perestrello aptly called it "Bahia Formosa" or the Beautiful Bay. The first European inhabitants were the 100 men stranded here for nine months when their ship, the San Gonzales sank in 1630. In 1763 the first European settlers in the Bay were stock farmers, hunters and frontiersmen from the Western Cape.
