Where2Golf says:

Roodepoort Country Club, or Ruimsig as it is frequently called, has benefitted from the combined skills of not one but two distinguished course designers, Gary Player and Ron Kirby. The product of their work is a wonderfully laid out and always challenging course. The terrain here is more open than on many of Jo'burg's parkland courses. Rather than tight tree-lined fairways, it is likely to be water hazards, substantive bunkering, quite thick grassy rough and perhaps the wind that will give you most to think about. Eight ponds, large and small, and several water ditches will need to factored into your course management, with water hazards dangerously lurking in front of several greens or lying in wait for slightly wayward tee-shots. Only one of the par-3's is water-protected, but holes like the par-4 13th and par-5 14th will need some accurate hitting to avoid getting wet. As the course radiates out from the impressive, green-roofed clubhouse, several of the holes climb a gradual incline to the north-east, giving some picturesque views onto surrounding hills and countryside. The excellent greens here at Ruimsig are large, sometimes very large, and usually full of challenging slopes and borrows. Although there are some good-sized houses along parts of the course perimeter, the overall feel here is one of linksy openness and space, quietly rural rather than busily suburban.

Did you know?

When close to (and hopefully not in) the water hazards, look out for the wonderful chattering array of birdlife. Some of South Africa's most interesting and colourful birds inhabit the reeds and rushes - including bright yellow weaver birds, red bishops and the long-tailed widow bird (shown above).
