Where2Golf says:

The Bryanston Country Club: There is something charmingly English about this old, established and elegantly classical golf club, located in the leafy north-western suburbs of Johannesburg. Within the quiet sanctuary of Bryanston's well-groomed greens and fairways, there is little to disturb your concentration and appreciation of this fine golfing gem. From first to last, this gently undulating, parkland layout will test and probe your game. The wonderfully varied array of trees are well-spaced, but can become troublesome if you are too wayward from the tee. Water makes its presence felt on almost half the holes, with small ponds and occasional creeks to be negotiated. Bryanstone's delightful mix of well-designed straight and doglegging holes, some heading gently uphill, others down, will ensure all aspects of your game are tested. To set the scene, both nines open in excellent fashion. The first hole is a straight and testing long par-5, played towards a backdrop of wooded hills receding into the distance beyond the green. The downhill par-4 10th is one of Bryanston's best - gently turning from right to left with a creek to be avoided on both the drive and second shots. And so each of the two nine-hole loops unfold, with many handsome holes set in this spacious parkland environment. Perhaps the best strategy for the greens is to take a caddie - many of the slopes and borrows on the excellent greens will outwit even the best of putters. A delight to play and one of the lesser known gems of Johannesburg golf.

Did you know?

The suburb of Bryanston was established in 1938. Its principal developers, an offshoot of the giant Anglo-American mining giant, promising a new golf course as an incentive for existing Johannesburg residents to make the 20km trek north. After WWII however, there was still no sign of a golf course, so in 1947 a committee of golfers was formed and a deal made with the developers who sold a tract of land to the newly formed club. The celebrated English golf course architect, Charles Hugh Alison, was commissioned to design the course.
