South Africa Best Golf Courses

Best golf courses in South Africa

You may already have heard of southern Africa's big five game animals; they are perhaps matched by another big five who have straddled the world's golfing elite in recent years : Bobby Locke, Gary Player, Nick Price, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen. Its no wonder that golfers of this quality come from the southern part of Africa - the golfing environment is just made for the development of top quality players.

The courses themselves are both numerous and of a high and testing standard. The biggest concentrations of courses are to be found around Durban and KwaZulu-Natal; Cape Town and the Garden Route, and also in and around Johannesburg and Pretoria, not forgetting nearby Sun City. In few other countries will you find such well presented courses which can also boast a huge variety of flora and fauna.

On most golf courses you will be entertained by a spectacular array of birdlife, while some of the more notable wild animals may also put in appearances depending on where you are playing - vervet monkeys and baboons are not uncommon, while hippo, crocodile, giraffe, warthogs and the like can be seen on a few specific courses.

The longevity of golf in South Africa ensures a wonderful array of old, established courses, which are increasingly being supplemented by excellent new resort courses. Some of these newer courses, especially the coastal layouts, can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the world's best courses. Green-keeping is generally of a high standard, and the almost obligatory halfway-house facilities could be a model for food standards and friendly service the world over, even if they do add 10 or 15 minutes to your round.

The availability of good quality, well-trained caddies is very well developed, due in large part to the Vodacom Caddy Foundation, which supports and trains caddies throughout South Africa.

Koksijde Golf ter Hille Golf Club: on what was previously open farmland, an enjoyable and challenging links-style layout has been crafted.
