Charleston National Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1989

Charleston National Golf Club: In addition to Rees Jones' excellent design, Charleston National contains many majestic marshland views, particularly at the start and finish of this always pleasing and challenging layout.

The first three holes get the round off to an excellent and very natural start, with large areas of marsh opening up from the par-4 first hole, and needing to be crossed at the par-3 2nd. You'll see plenty more of this superb Lowcountry wetland environment along the way, flanking or cutting through several fairways and protecting a good number of greens.

From the par-4 13th right through to the closing par-3 18th (which requires another tee-to-green carry over the marsh) you will be golfing in virtually uninterrupted and unspoilt marshland splendour. The short and tight par-4 16th contains the most stunning vista, out across Copahee Sound and away south to Dewees Island and the Isle of Palms.

Small earthmounds ripple alongside several of the good-width and flattish fairways, leading you onto large undulating greens, where further earthmounding and high-lipped bunkering join forces with the wetland defences.

Although real estate makes its presence felt in the middle section of the course, it is generally set well enough back and doesn't interfere with enjoying this otherwise very natural and impressive golf course.

Did you know?

Shortly after Charleston National opened in 1989 as a private country club facility, Hurricane Hugo tore through the Charleston area, creating havoc and destruction in its path. The result for Charleston National was the loss of several thousand trees. The course was closed for a year for renovation and redesign, re-opening in 1991 as a semi-private golf course that could also be enjoyed by visiting golfers.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
