The Sea Pines Resort (Atlantic Dunes course)

4-star: generally an excellent standard golf course, well worth visiting.

Where2Golf says:

The Sea Pines Resort (Atlantic Dunes by David Love III course): Sea Pines' historic Ocean Course (now named Atlantic Dunes) was the first layout built on Hilton Head Island. Courtesy of Davis Love III's recent redesign, the original layout now has a much changed look and feel, although the layout's oceanside credentials remain limited to just one hole. The beachside green of the par-3 15th is where you'll enjoy a brief but wonderfully scenic Atlantic Ocean view.

But for the oceanside 15th, most of the course is played a short way inland, separated from the ocean by two or three rows of luxury homes. The name Atlantic Dunes may have you thinking about golfing on a British-style seaside links. Perhaps better to anticipate something along the lines of say, Pinehurst No.2, where stylish bunkering and large sandy waste areas pose an ever-present threat ( ... albeit at Atlantic Dunes with palm and oak trees replacing the pine, and ponds and lagoons much in play).

There's space enough here for big hitters, once you've negotiated the water-lined opening stretch. Thereafter you shouldn't feel too crowded by a fine variety of mature indigenous trees that line most holes. Small ponds and lagoons continue to occasionally threaten ... not least at the testing straightaway closing duo, comprising the long par-5 17th and also long par-4 18th.

Laid out in two 9-hole loops, the many lagoons and stylish bunkering require both respect and accuracy if you are attempting to card a good score. No surprise that the newly named Atlantic Dunes remains one of Hilton Head Island's most popular courses.
