Salobre Golf & Resort (New/North course)

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 2008

Salobre Golf & Resort (New course): Salobre's New course (originally known as the North course) is certainly not one for the feint-hearted. Whereas the Old course (originally South course) is an easier-going and classically laid out parkland design, the New is dramatically different.

Occupying the rugged terrain, canyons and ravines of a constantly, and often steeply, undulating desert environment, many holes seem to cling precariously to the hilly slopes. Significant elevation changes characterise most holes, on which slivers of fairway are usually flanked by rocky drop-offs or harsh desert scrub. In this very natural and tranquil wilderness, the "flaming" cactus-like cardon (see Did You Know below) flourishes in abundance, while chocolate coloured cliffs and pock-marked mountainside slopes all add to the fabulous Arizona-like scenery. At the higher elevations, the distant Atlantic Ocean also gets into the vistas.

For many golfers this course will provide a challenging and ultimately fun outing, especially once your game becomes "tuned into" the layout's tightness and many elevation changes. If your are not on your A-game and you are losing count of how many balls have disappeared into the rocky ravines, then its best to take some deep breaths of fresh mountain air and simply soak up the stunning scenery - with or without camera in hand.

Salobre is one of the more recently established golf resort destinations on Gran Canaria. It is also alone in having two 18-hole championship golf courses - the more relaxed Old course and the more dramatic and testing New.

Did you know?

Salobre's logo features a native plant of the Canary Islands, the cactus-like Cardon (Euphorbia Canariensis). Also known to horticulturists as Canary Island Spurge or Hercules Club, this succulent member of the family Euphorbiaceae and genus Euphorbia, grows in the arid and humid environment of the lowest areas in the Canary Islands. It is a small tree, rather than a cactus, and grows up to 3-4 meters high. >> Salobre is the Spanish word meaning brackish or salty.
