Where2Golf says:

Royal Colombo Golf Club: Occupying a relatively compact space in the heart of Sri Lanka's capital city, "RCGC" is one of the world's oldest golf clubs outside the British Isles. Tucked into this pleasant tree-lined parkland course, you'll find a beguiling layout to test your full repertoire of golfing skills.

Occupying relatively flat terrain, and incorporating Donald Steel's modifications from the turn of the millennium, the layout comprises an out-and-back loop of eight holes, followed by one of ten. Here amongst the tightish and predominantly bunker-free fairways, a number of interesting ploys overcome the layout's lack of acreage.

The most interesting ruse of all, comes at the par-4 1st and 18th holes. They share the same not overly wide fairway. A traffic light system allows groups playing 1 and 18 to tee-off simultaneously.

At the heart of the course is a not overly large pond, which cleverly spreads itself out to create the threat of water at the 1st, 5th, 7th and 8th holes. Running through the pond, and in fact north-south through the entire course, is a railway line! A separate pond makes for an interesting approach shot at the straightaway par-4 2nd, while on the back-nine water only really threatens at the par-4 12th.

Did you know?

King George V bestowed the Royal title on Colombo GC in 1928. It is the only golf club in Sri Lanka honoured by royal prerogative during the period of British rule (1815-1948), and was the second club outside the British Isles to be granted the ‘Royal’ prefix, after Royal Calcutta (founded 1829).
