Barsebäck Golf & Country Club (Donald Steel course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1989

Barsebäck Golf & Country Club (Donald Steel course): Home to a succession of top professional events, including a Solheim Cup, Barseback is one of the biggest names in Swedish golf. Here you will find two 18-hole championship layouts, the Masters and Steel courses. With its onsite hotel accommodation and conference facilities, the resort offers an excellent seaside Stay&Play opportunity.

Complementing the more renowned Masters course, the Donald Steel layout (originally called the New course) also provides a variety of golfing challenges and environments. After a tree-lined start, the front-nine moves into a water-defended and relatively open stretch of holes. After picking your way past the ponds at the par-5 4th, par-4 5th and especially at the par-4 7th, which squeezes between two ponds, you can 'relax' into the 'drier' and more tree-lined back-nine. But even here you'll need to avoid some huge greenside bunkers, and once on the large greens getting down in two is never a certainty. The attractive woodland back-nine contains some of the best holes on the course, and some of the tightest.

The middle section of the course brings you within earshot of the Malmo-Helsingborg motorway, where a bit of traffic noise is inevitable, but not overly distracting. This pleasant championship course handsomely complements Barseback's more renowned Masters course.

Traigh Golf Course (pronounced "try", and meaning "beach" in Gaelic): You'll find this nine-hole seaside gem on the scenic coast road (as opposed to the more inland and quicker A830) between Arisaig and Morar. Although not on the well-beaten path of Scotland's "trophy" courses, if you are passing through this area, it's a must play.

Cullen Links Golf Club: "immensely scenic", "quirky as golf can get", "short!", "hugely enjoyable" ... Cullen Links attracts as wide a variety of comments as it lays down golfing challenges. Shoehorned into this 4,600 yard treasure trove are ten par-3s, seven par-4s and a good-length par-5. Here you'll find all the seaside scenery a golfer could ask for, and a lot more besides.
