Where2Golf says:

Göteborgs Golf Klubb: Also known locally as Hovås, here you will find Sweden's oldest golf club, and the second oldest in Scandinavia. With woodland and some unobtrusive housing located beyond the course perimeter, and plenty of views onto the Kattegat sea, there's plenty to admire as you play round this historic golf course.

The front-nine presents a really strong and absorbing layout. Although there are steep climbs to be made at the par-5 3rd and par-3 7th ... the spectacular views at the end of those climbs ensure your energy has not been expended in vain. Many elevated tees, rocky outcrops dusted with heather, lovely foliage and a generally excellent level of upkeep, all contribute to the charm of Göteborg's outward nine. But don't relax too much; you'll need to concentrate on hitting the ball straight, which several tee shots certainly demand.

After the par-5 10th, which takes you down to the Kattegat shoreline, the flatter back-nine lacks some of the impact of the more undulating front-nine. You'll need to be alert to the shout of "Fore!" in the middle section of the back-nine, which you may feel is becoming more compact and possibly running out of steam. But the course rallies again for a good final trio. The short par-4 closing hole is especially memorable, with its elevated tee, gently doglegging fairway and a finish in front of the impressive clubhouses ( ... old and new).

Did you know?

Founded in 1902, Göteborgs Golf Klubb is the oldest golf club in Sweden and the second oldest in Scandinavia, behind Københavns/Royal Copenhagen (1898). The original clubhouse at Göteborgs is the large wooden building that stands above the current clubhouse, which dates from 1938.

A forerunner of the current Göteborgs Golf Klubb was known to exist from 1891. On the initiative of an English pastor, the Reverend A.V. Despard, the members of the Gothenburg Golf Club played on a basic layout at Sandviken in Hisingen, to the north of the city. The club ceased to operate when the Rev. Despard returned to England in 1894.

Viktor H. Setterberg, a local businessman and golf enthusiast continued to ensure golf was played at Hisingen during the late 1890s. In 1902 the Göteborgs Golf Klubb was officially launched, but within two years needed to find a new home. Setterberg was instrumental in the club's relocation in 1904 to its current location in Hovås, south of the city. Setterberg was also the founder of the Swedish Golf Federation (Golförbundet), and became known as the "father of Swedish golf".
