Banyan Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2008

Banyan Golf Club, established in 2009, is home to one of Thailand's top-rated championship courses. Laid out on a former pineapple plantation, this open parkland layout occupies a delightfully agreeable setting ... a course harmoniously at one with its natural environment. Beyond the course, thickly forested hills and distant mountains provide an easy on the eye backdrop to the holes.

Banyan's two nine-hole loops are laid out in a picturesque valley, with two creeks making their presence felt on both the front and back nines. Although water threatens on about half the holes, the course has been designed for you to enjoy the golfing challenges, not to be unfairly beaten-up by them.

Strategically placed water hazards, waste bunkers and smaller sand traps are spread throughout the course. The greens here are generally large and well protected by the bunkers. Occasional use of the native pineapple groves brings local "fruits" into play if you stray too far off the nicely undulating fairways.

Did you know?

Banyan, Hua Hin apparently takes its name from the small "mountain" range that separates the golf club and resort from the Hua Hin coastline, which is about 4 km to the east (as the crow flies). No doubt banyan trees are also present in the area's verdant mix of flora.

Banyan, Hua Hin is not part of the "Banyan Tree" group of luxury hotels, which are found in many parts of Asia and beyond.

Traigh Golf Course (pronounced "try", and meaning "beach" in Gaelic): You'll find this nine-hole seaside gem on the scenic coast road (as opposed to the more inland and quicker A830) between Arisaig and Morar. Although not on the well-beaten path of Scotland's "trophy" courses, if you are passing through this area, it's a must play.

Cullen Links Golf Club: "immensely scenic", "quirky as golf can get", "short!", "hugely enjoyable" ... Cullen Links attracts as wide a variety of comments as it lays down golfing challenges. Shoehorned into this 4,600 yard treasure trove are ten par-3s, seven par-4s and a good-length par-5. Here you'll find all the seaside scenery a golfer could ask for, and a lot more besides.
