La Quinta Resort & Club (Dunes course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1981

La Quinta Resort & Club (Dunes course): Blessed with five public-access and four private golf courses, the Dunes is one of the less heralded courses in the star-studded La Quinta/PGA West stable. This out-and-back layout takes you on a scenic journey through some of La Quinta's residential areas, with most holes flanked by houses on both sides, though never too closely. The final five holes move away from the real estate and into an open environment, alongside La Quinta's Mountain course, where occasional palm trees and plenty of water grace the challenging closing stretch.

This excellently maintained, classic Pete Dye design, with his trademark railway-sleepers much in evidence, will keep you thoroughly absorbed. Plenty of bunkering and several water defended holes all provide a worthy test of your golfing skills. The not overly large but often elevated greens are defended by all manner of grass and sand bunkers, good earthmounding and threatening water on at least five occasions. At the excellent par-3 8th, water envelopes the green on three sides, with large bunkers also lying in wait. The pencil thin dog-legging fairway at the tough par-4 17th is flanked by water from start to finish, not too dissimilar from the shorter par-4 18th, where the dog-leg moves the other way.

Elevation changes are not too pronounced here, although each hole is nicely shaped and contoured. The splendid Santa Rosa mountains provide a scenic backdrop to much of the course, with their angular peaks and elevations often reflected in Dye's mounding around the smallish greens.

Did you know?

La Quinta was the vision of Walter H. Morgan, the son of John S. Morgan, wealthy owner of the Morgan Oyster Company. Morgan came to the desert in 1921 for health reasons and purchased 1,400 acres, envisioning the creation of a small, secluded retreat. The La Quinta Hotel was opened in 1926. He is believed to have chosen the name La Quinta after hearing a rancher in Mexico tell the tale of a big country house surrounded by cottages.

Through time and several changes in ownership, La Quinta Resort & Club has grown from its original 20 casitas (guest rooms) into a fully-integrated resort with 796 casitas, many suites and villas, nine championship golf courses (La Quinta and PGA West), an award-winning spa, 23 tennis courts and much more.

Traigh Golf Course (pronounced "try", and meaning "beach" in Gaelic): You'll find this nine-hole seaside gem on the scenic coast road (as opposed to the more inland and quicker A830) between Arisaig and Morar. Although not on the well-beaten path of Scotland's "trophy" courses, if you are passing through this area, it's a must play.
