3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

The Ranch at Moreno Valley Golf Club: Three contrasting nine-hole loops - the Lake, Valley and Mountain - are laid out at Moreno Valley Ranch, just a stone's throw from Lake Perris recreational area. The Mountain nine gets you high-up into the boulder-clad hills of Mt Russell, from where you can enjoy some of the most spectacular panoramas to be found on any Southern California golf course. Some tee-shots will feel a bit tight as you progress upwards into the quiet and natural hillside environment, before descending again to the clubhouse via the 7th, 8th and heavily-bunkered 9th holes. With limited housing along the way, the views and scenery are fabulous, culminating in a breathtaking vista at the downhill par-3 7th. By contrast the Valley-nine is much flatter, with lightly tree-lined pairs of holes heading out-and-back in links-style, and water coming dangerously into play on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 7th holes. Real estate is more present than on the Mountain-nine, flanking each pair of holes although never too closely. Named after Lake Perris (which you don't actually see from the course), the Lake-nine is the most spread out of the loops, weaving its way through a residential community. Although the holes are flanked by housing on either side, several are amongst the best of the 27, and provide another chance to climb-up into the rock-strewn hills. All three-nines are excellently laid-out by Pete Dye and will thoroughly test your golfing skills. However, overall maintenance and presentation standards on the course are unlikely to win any prizes or accolades.

Did you know?

Located just 2 miles from the golf course, but not visible from it, is Lake Perris. Over 2 miles long and over a mile wide, Lake Perris was built in the early 1970's as the last reservoir in the California Water Project to provide drinking water to Southern California residents. Nestled between Moreno Valley and Perris, this State Recreation Area provides a place to escape the bustle of city life. There are many recreational activities to enjoy, such as hiking, biking, water-skiing, boating, jet skiing, fishing, swimming, horse back riding, camping and picknicking. There is also a Regional Indian Museum open on weekends and Wednesdays.

Traigh Golf Course (pronounced "try", and meaning "beach" in Gaelic): You'll find this nine-hole seaside gem on the scenic coast road (as opposed to the more inland and quicker A830) between Arisaig and Morar. Although not on the well-beaten path of Scotland's "trophy" courses, if you are passing through this area, it's a must play.
