Dunes West Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1991

Dunes West Golf Club has long been a favourite with visitors to the Charleston area. It may not be the most dramatic golf course in the Lowcountry, but its appeal lies in a solid layout, natural environment (where real estate is not at all intrusive), pleasantly tree-lined aspect and several more open areas (especially found on the back-nine, which is played on either side of Wando Plantation Way). The gently rippling fairways are often generously wide and not too aggressively bunkered, although the par-5 7th and 15th holes both have menacing cross-bunkers lurking on the fairways. From time-to-time you'll also need to be aware of fairway-lining and greenside water hazards, which come in the form of ponds, large and small. Always nicely maintained, there is an easy-going southern charm about Dunes West, but don't let that fool you into thinking it lacks any real challenges. The rough can become quite penal during the summer and, in addition to the occasional water hazards, sandy waste areas, dotted with clumps of longer wire grass, also line some fairways on the front-nine. The well-contoured greens are often slightly elevated and well-protected at the front by earthmounding and bunkering, requiring a high-flighted shot into them. Both nines finish in style alongside Wagner Creek, which flows into the Wando River just a few hundred yards further north.

Did you know?

Evidence of the first inhabitants of this area dates back at least 8,000 years. Indians harvested the rich resources of the rivers and streams, particularly oysters and other shellfish. The Europeans referred to the Indians of the Wando Neck as the "Sewee" and the "Wando." The seagoing Sewee may have built a fortified village along the Wando not far from this site. In 1712, the land was purchased by Captain John Vanderhorst, Joseph Vanderhorst and Thomas Lynch. Lynch was the grandfather of Thomas Lynch Jr., a signatory of the Declaration of Independence. During this time, the property was known as "Four Men's Ramble." The Vanderhorst family also owned a great deal of Kiawah Island. Lexington, as this plantation site became to be known, changed hands several times until 1930. In that year it was purchased by Henrietta Hartford, one of the nation's wealthiest women, who proceeded to develop an elaborate estate. The development included the addition of a row of oaks on either side of the main road leading to the estate (Wando Plantation Way), a saltwater swimming pool, tennis courts, nine-hole golf course and gardens - some of these additions remain today. Scratch Golf Company acquired the property in 1991 to operate and develop Dunes West Golf Club.
