Grand Cypress (New)
Grand Cypress Golf Club (New course): Orlando's impressive Grand Cypress Resort, located next door to Walt Disney World, boasts 45 holes of Jack Nicklaus Signature golf. The original three nine-hole loops, which make up the North/South/East course, were joined a short while later by the distinctively different New course.
Although New in name, this Nicklaus Signature design takes its cue, and opening and closing holes, from the Old Course St Andrews (and other notable Scottish links courses). All the hallmarks of a traditional duneland seaside golf course have been recreated here, except of course views onto the sea, and a notable absence of thick rough. Although surrounded by woodland, the course itself is open and virtually treeless.
There are plenty of small, strategically located pot bunkers that threaten marginally wayward drives and also defend the large, undulating greens. Water ditches (burns), low dry-stone walls, gorse-like bushes (whins) and slick, bump-and-run green surrounds all feature strongly. As do several huge double-greens.
One Scottish feature that is relatively absent here is knee-high rough skirting the well-groomed fairways, which allows big-hitters to "larrup" the ball into relatively non-penal, expansively open areas. Really fun to play, and a good test off the back tees.
