MAJORS (1): US Open (1924). Six wins on the American professional circuit.

Did you know?

A diminutive figure, abrasive personality and slow pace of play did not make Walker one of the most popular characters on the emerging professional tournament circuit in the post-First World War era.

He recorded six professional circuit wins, including the US Open in 1924 at Oakland Hills CC in Detroit. Tied with Jones for the lead after three rounds, Walker outplayed the legendary amateur in the final round to take the title by three shots.

Whereas Jones went on to greater things, Walker drifted into a life of alcoholism, obscurity and destitution. His toiled for a few dollars as a caddie in Miami, sleeping in Salvation Army hostels. Aged 55, he died in 1948 in a New Jersey jail cell, where he had gone for shelter and a bed for the night.
