Did you know?

Glenna Collett took up the game of golf aged 14, and became the outstanding women's golfer of the inter-war years, before the establishment of the LPGA Tour. She was known by many as the “female Bobby Jones.” She won the U.S. Women's Amateur title six times, and in 1929 triumphed in 59 out of 60 competitive matches.

After marrying Edwin H. Vare and having two children, she returned to competitive golf in 1934 as Glenna Collett Vare. Success was more limted than before, but she did capture her sixth U.S. Women's title in 1935. Commenting on her highly successful career, which included prodigously long driving, she said the secret was "love of combat, serenity of mind and fearlessness."

Glenna Collett wrote two books on golf: Golf For Young Players (1926), and Ladies in the Rough (1928). Since 1953, the LPGA has presented the Vare Trophy to the golfer with the lowest stroke average per round during the LPGA Tour season.
