Young Tom Kidd, as he was known to distinguish him from his father Tom Kidd (who also caddied in St Andrews), is best known for winning the 1873 Open Championship. It was the first Open to be played in St Andrews. In winning The Open, Young Tom Kidd prevented his contemporary and fellow St Andrews native, Young Tom Morris, from claiming five Open Championship wins in a row.
Kidd, who came from a family of weavers turned golfers, was known in St Andrews for his flashy dressing and colourful garb, as well as his long-hitting golf game.
